Rail Staff Carol Service goes online

Every year, the rail industry celebrates Christmas with its own carol service. Hosted by the Transport Benevolent Fund, the Rail Staff Carol Service is traditionally held in London at St Mary’s Somers Town.

However, with COVID-19 restrictions in place, that was not possible this year.

So Porterbrook joined with Network Rail, the Rail Freight Group, Rail Delivery Group and RSSB to create an online version of the popular service.

It was led by Railway Mission Chaplain Rev Christopher Henley and featured carols sung by London’s Transport Choir. Readings were contributed by Andrew Haines (Network Rail), Maggie Simpson (Rail Freight Group), Mark Phillips (RSSB) and Mary Grant (Porterbrook).

Rupert Brennan Brown, Porterbrook’s director of stakeholder engagement, said: “Our thanks to all our industry partners for supporting this year’s virtual Carol Service. We hope that by making this available on-line it will bring a little Christmas cheer to those railway colleagues who keep Britain moving over the festive period and throughout the year.”

Those wishing to make a donation to the Transport Benevolent Fund can do so on the charity’s Money Giving page.
