Kent bridges replaced

Two railway bridges in Thanet, Kent, were reconstructed over the weekend of 12/13 June 2021. Minnis Road and Creek River bridges, near Birchington-on-Sea, had reached the end of their working lives, with speed restrictions placed on them for safety reasons. To avoid delaying trains any further, both bridges were replaced by new structures, being craned into place overnight on Saturday and track laid on Sunday.

Before the work began – Creek River bridge (left) and Minnis Road bridge.

The removal and installation of the bridges was carried out using two large road-mobile cranes, each capable of lifting over 600 tonnes. After the bridge decks were lifted into place, the railway was rebuilt on top and the speed restrictions in the area lifted.

Due to the location, the work could only take place in summer, as the land around the railway spends most of the winter flooded and high winds would stop the cranes from lifting the old bridges out and the new bridges in.

Network Rail reconstructed two bridges in Kent over one weekend.
