Hybrid cars being built in the Midlands will be transported to continental Europe using an ‘eco-locomotive’ that runs on fuel made from vegetable oil.

Rail freight operator DB Cargo’s sustainable hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO) fuelled train can cut CO₂ by up to 90 per cent when compared to diesel. The operator has been exploring ways to use HVO to reduce emissions in the short term.

DB Cargo UK launches its new ‘green’ freight locomotive at Toton in Nottinghamshire.

The train will take hundreds of Toyotas from Derby into France and the Czech Republic each week via the Channel Tunnel, and it will import other Toyotas on the return leg.

Chris Heaton-Harris, Rail Minister.

The train has been named ‘I am a climate hero’ to underline its green credentials, which are intended to help align with the UK Government’s goal of Net Zero by 2050.

Chris Heaton-Harris, rail minister, said: “We are boosting British business whilst cutting carbon. This is what building back greener is all about.

“Trains are one of the most eco-friendly ways to transport goods and, through ingenuity and innovation, DB Cargo are leading the way in making it even greener.”

Andrea Rossi, DB Cargo UK.

Andrea Rossi, DB Cargo CEO, said: “We are very excited at the prospect of working with Toyota to trial the use of HVO on its services to and from Europe.

“HVO is one of the world’s purest and greenest fuels and has an important role to play in helping DB Cargo UK and its rail customers decarbonise their operations.

“This will be the first time we have used HVO on an automotive service and one bound for the continent. It’s a first on many levels for us.”
