Worldwide railway organisation UIC (Union Internationale des Chemins de Fer – International Union of Railways) has appointed Christian Chavanel to be its new director of rail systems.

Christian Chavanel, an engineer with more than 30 years’ railway experience in international development, project management, operation, maintenance, safety, standardisation, and regulatory affairs, replaces Dr Marc Antoni, who led this department for the last five years.

Amongst his previous experience, Christian Chavanel has been interoperability and standardisation director of SNCF since 2014 and chairman of CEN-CENELEC Sector Forum Rail since 2016. One of his earliest roles with SNCF was as head of the regional signalling department at Gare du Nord, back in 1992.

The UIC rail systems department supports the work of the Rail System Forum, which aims to keep railways at the edge of technology, interconnecting seamlessly with other modes of transport. The 150-strong department covers a wide range of subjects, including train-track interaction, track and structures, rolling stock, energy management, asset management and operations, telecoms, signalling and digital applications, and currently has 78 ongoing projects.
