Alstom suggests compromises to European Commission over Bombardier takeover

As expected, the proposed takeover of Bombardier Transportation by Alstom is now in front of the European Commission.

After initial discussions, it seems that Alstom feels that the European Commission may have a few concerns about the takeover’s effect on competition in the European rolling-stock market.

As a result, in coordination with Bombardier Transportation and major shareholder the Caisse de depot et placement du Québec (CDPQ), Alstom has suggested certain actions to the European Commission, including:

  • A transfer of Bombardier Transportation’s contribution to the V300 Zefiro very-high-speed train (produced in partnership with AnsaldoBreda – now Hitachi);
  • The divestment of the Alstom Coradia Polyvalent train family and the Reichshoffen production site in France;
  • The divestment of the Bombardier Talent 3 platform and dedicated production facilities located within the Hennigsdorf site in Germany;
  • Providing access to certain interfaces and products for some of Bombardier Transportation’s signalling on-board units and train control management systems (TCMS).

These suggestions are subject to the European Commission’s approval and also to consultation with employee representatives’ bodies.

Alstom still believes that the acquisition of Bombardier Transportation remains on track for the first half of 2021.
