An empty passenger train derailed at Fratton depot in Portsmouth early in the morning of Thursday 5 August 2021. No one was injured but the tracks were badly damaged and the train blocked entry to the depot.
As a result, South Western Railway cancelled all trains between Salisbury and Reading and introduced a revised timetable for services between London Waterloo and Portsmouth and London Waterloo and Weymouth.
Network Rail mobilised to clear the train and repair the damage. An investigation was launched into the causes of the derailment, which happened at low speed.
Some disruption to services continued into the weekend of 7/8 August.
South Western Railway apologised for the impact this incident had on customers’ journeys, stating: “Following a low-speed derailment at Fratton depot on Thursday, the train has now been re-railed, and the majority of repairs completed. Two sidings are currently out of use, however the rest of the depot is now operational.”
