Alstom has won a contract to deliver 36 eight-car trains for the 8-Diamante (Diamond) and 9-Esmerala (Emerald) lines on the São Paulo Metro system in Brazil. The deal was awarded by ViaMobilidade Linhas 8 e 9 concessionaire as part of a range of improvements it is pledging to make on the two lines, having recently been given the responsibility to operate and maintain them for 30 years.
Line 8, which connects Júlio Prestes to Amador Bueno, is 41.6 kilometers long and has 22 stations, serving the municipalities of São Paulo, Osasco, Carapicuíba, Barueri, Jandira and Itapevi.
Line 9 connects Osasco to Grajaú, running 32 kilometers with 18 stations, serving the cities of São Paulo and Osasco.
Pre-pandemic, the two lines carried more than a million passengers a day between them.
This new Metropolis fleet is the same model as the 9000 Series that Companhia Paulista de Trens Metropolitano (CPTM) currently operates on lines 12 and 13. Each train is able to carry 2,600 passengers.
Made of stainless steel, the car body shells are designed to last for more than 40 years. They are also more energy efficient and will be controlled by Alstom’s Automatic Train Control (ATC) signalling solution.
