A track tamping machine, owned and operated by Balfour Beatty, caught fire on the railway near Dunton Green station, between Sevenoaks and Orpington in Kent, at around 05:00 on 23 April 2021.

Six fire engines were despatched to the scene to bring the fire under control. Working alongside other agencies and emergency services, crews wearing breathing apparatus worked in difficult conditions to contain and control the fire with a special foam designed to smother the flames.

No injuries were reported and the lines were reopened to passenger traffic before 14:00.

Owner Balfour Beatty apologised for any inconvenience caused and stated that it would be carrying out a full investigation.
