Transport Select Committee membership announced

Following the earlier announcement that Huw Merriman MP would chair the Transport Select Committee, the full membership has now been agreed.

Eleven MPs (the minimum number required) are to sit on the committee, six Conservative, four Labour and one Scottish Nationalist.

The Transport Select Committee examines the spending policies and administration of the Department for Transport – there is a Select Committee for each government department. Members decide upon the line of inquiry and then gather written and oral evidence. Findings are reported to the Commons, printed, and published on the Parliament website. The government then usually has 60 days to reply to the committee’s recommendations.

Committees also have power to appoint specialist advisers. These are not permanent members of staff, but outside specialists paid by the day. They are often, but not always, academics, and are appointed either generally or to assist with particular inquiries. They support the clerk as the head of the committee’s staff.

For this Parliament, the members of the Transport Select Committee will be:

  • Huw Merriman MP (Chair) (Conservative)
  • Ruth Cadbury MP (Labour)
  • Lilian Greenwood MP (Labour)
  • Simon Jupp MP (Conservative)
  • Robert Largan MP (Conservative)
  • Chris Loder MP (Conservative)
  • Karl McCartney MP (Conservative)
  • Grahame Morris MP (Labour)
  • Gavin Newlands MP (Scottish National Party)
  • Greg Smith MP (Conservative)
  • Sam Tarry MP (Labour)
