A new freight service, from the Port of Felixstowe to iPort Rail, Doncaster, has been announced by GB Railfreight as it continues to expand its intermodal business.
The service, which will run five days a week, will be GBRf’s 16th intermodal service. It has expanded rapidly into this market over the past 18 months and GBRf trains now carry one third of all containerised rail traffic to and from the Port of Felixstowe.
GBRf also provides all of the freight services currently using iPort Rail and has done so since it operated the first commercial service to arrive at the newly opened facility back in September 2018.
A 30-acre multimodal rail freight facility in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, with storage capacity on-site for 1,500 TEU containers, iPort Rail was developed by pan-European logistics real estate specialists Verdion. Connected via the South Yorkshire joint freight line direct to the East Coast main line and the UK national rail network, it has been designed to accommodate the UK’s longest trains and to meet Channel Tunnel (SACTFF) approved secure facility standards for international movements.
The new service will provide customers with more logistical options in the wider Yorkshire area and increase the diversity of GBRf’s offering in Yorkshire.

With nearly 1.5 million TEU moving between Felixstowe and locations in the Northern Powerhouse region each year, the port is already the North’s major gateway for global trade and this new route reinforces that position.
